Mount Desert Island (MDI) is the largest island off the coast of Maine and the second largest island off the east-coast of the United States. However, it is second to none in terms of beauty!
The most popular attractions on MDI are Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park . However the island is also home to Town Hill, Otter Creek, Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor , Southwest Harbor , Bass Harbor, Tremont, Pretty March Somesville
MDI has around 10,000 full-time residents, however around 2.5 Million peoople visit the Acadia National Park on an annual basis. There isnt any place on the East Coast quite like Mount Desert Island, from the spectacular coastline to the quaint towns , it really has something to offer everyone. Mt Desert Island is home to Acadia National Park ,which is the second most visited park in the United States hosting more than 2 million visitors per year. Visitors can come to relax and enjoy the scenery or hike the trails and granite peaks , or bicycle the many carriage roads.
Acadia National Park encompasses nearly half of Mount Desert Island with more than 48,000 acres . While visiting MDI , you will find 120 miles of hiking trails, 45 miles of carriage roads , 26 mountains with eight over 1000 feet , 17 of the mountains can be climbed , 26 lakes and ponds and also 18 stone bridges.
On the Park Loop Road you can enjoy a 27 mile ride to view several scenic turnouts, mountain cliffs and forests and the beautiful rugged coastline. Within the park you will find several highlights including Cadillac Mountain. Cadillac Mountain at 1532 feet is the highest mountain on the East Coast and also the first place on the East Coast to view the sunrise.The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking and can be accessed by a 3.5 mile winding narrow road or by hiking.the trails.The mountain is open seasonally. If you prefer relaxing, Sand Beach located within the park,is a natural pocket beach primary composed of crushed fine shell. There is also the very popular attraction Thunder Hole, at mid tide the water crashing against the rocks sounds just like thunder.
In the winter months in Acadia National Park you can enjoy cross country skiing on the carriage roads and the 41 miles of unplowed park roads. Ski equipment and rentals are available is some of the local communities. .Snowmobile travel is allowed on the 27 mile Park Loop Road and most of the fire roads
