Ellsworth is called the gateway to Bar Harbor, Acadia, and  MDI .  It is not technically on Mount Desert Island, but unless you have a private plane or are coming by boat as any Mainer will tell you: ‘you can’t get there from here’ without going through Ellsworth.

Ellsworth is the county seat of Hancock County and has a population of around 6,500.  Despite its small number of residents it is actually one of the largest cities in the US in terms of size covering nearly 100 square miles.

Ellsworth has a number of beautiful buildings a large number of great restaurants and accommodation prices are normally a bit lowering than you will find on the island.  It is definitely worth checking out!
